CHATR IMPACT STORY

ADAM – QLD PARTICIPANT

When 51-year-old Wakka Wakka man, Adam, first engaged with our Chatr Program, he was facing one of the most difficult periods of his life. Years of substance use had impacted his health, relationships, housing stability and ability to maintain employment. Family relationships were deteriorating, he was at risk of losing his accommodation and feared returning to homelessness–a cycle he desperately wanted to avoid.

Like many participants, Adam was not actively seeking counselling. He had spent years believing he needed to carry his struggles alone, holding deep shame about his circumstances and the impact they had on those around him. Through Chatr's culturally safe, relationship-based approach, trust was built without judgement, allowing Adam to begin talking openly about the future he wanted for himself and his family.

From there, we provided intensive one-on-one counselling, advocacy and coordinated support focused on addiction recovery, social and emotional wellbeing, and rebuilding stability. Adam was supported to access residential detoxification, engage in ongoing recovery supports, strengthen relapse prevention strategiesand address the practical barriers contributing to years of instability. Alongside his recovery, support focused on rebuilding routines, restoring confidence, reconnecting with family and creating realistic pathways towards employment.

Recovery was not a straight line.

More than 12 months later, Adam remains employed. Beyond employment, sustained recovery enabled him to rebuild relationships with his family, restore his confidence and experience milestones he once thought were impossible–including taking his family on their first holiday together.

Adam's journey demonstrates that culturally safe therapeutic support, coordinated advocacy and practical assistance can help participants overcome addiction, rebuild family connections and create lasting pathways to employment, stability and hope.

“I didn’t just get a job–Chatr gave me my life back. They believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself. They supported me through every step of my recovery and showed me that I could overcome my past and build a future I’m proud of. Today I’m clean, employed and connected to my family in a way I thought I’d lost forever.”

“Without the support I was given, I’m not sure I would sit here right now. What I do know is my life today is very, very, very good.”
