CHATR IMPACT STORY

STEVEN – SA PARTICIPANT

When Steven first engaged with Chatr, nearly every aspect of his life had been impacted by long-term substance use. Alongside recovery, he was navigating court matters, declining physical health, financial instability and overwhelming guilt about the impact his addiction had on his children, family relationships and sense of self.

Recovery required far more than counselling alone. Chatr provided trauma-informed therapeutic support while coordinating services across alcohol and other drug treatment, OARS, Narcotics Anonymous, SMART Recovery, behavioural change programs, health providers and legal supports. Acting as the central point of coordination, Chatr removed barriers, aligned services and allowed Steven to focus on his recovery rather than navigating a fragmented system.

Counselling focused on emotional regulation, relapse prevention, rebuilding routines and processing the guilt and shame that had become significant barriers to change. Every interaction also strengthened Steven's confidence, self-advocacy and ability to independently navigate services, supporting his long-term recovery beyond formal intervention.

As stability increased, Steven successfully transitioned into full-time employment while continuing treatment. Although his recovery was tested by ongoing court proceedings, complex family relationships and a traumatic workplace incident, he relied on the coping strategies, routines and support networks developed throughout counselling rather than returning to substance use.

Today, Steven is 21 weeks substance free, has maintained full-time employment for more than 12 weeks, remains actively engaged in recovery supports and continues to address his health, relationships and long-term goals.

“I have heaps of reasons to want to stay clean and actually love the feeling of being clean. I’m starting to let go of guilt…My attitude is coming from a better place now. I know drugs don’t help me fix anything. Putting energy into the right areas has helped me.”

“You provided strategic support and coordination, but also a safe place every time I saw you. It helped me get back on track and get into, and stay in, work this time for good.”
