CHATR IMPACT STORY

KARON – NSW PARTICIPANT

When Karon first engaged with Chatr, her life had narrowed to one goal–getting through each day. Living with Borderline Personality Disorder, complex trauma and multiple untreated medical conditions, she was consuming multiple litres of alcohol every day simply to function. The alcohol had already caused significant physical harm, contributing to several serious medical conditions.

Recovery required far more than attending detox.

Intensive therapeutic work focused on stabilisation, emotional regulation, building trust and helping her believe that change was possible. Counselling centred on understanding the role alcohol had played in helping her cope with years of complex trauma while gradually developing healthier strategies to manage distress without relying on alcohol.

Alongside this therapeutic work, Chatr coordinated a comprehensive network of supports across health, mental health and alcohol and other drug services. Significant advocacy ensured medical care, detox services, community supports and ongoing treatment providers were working together towards a shared recovery plan. Rather than expecting Karon to navigate multiple disconnected systems while managing addiction and serious health concerns, Chatr became the central point of coordination, removing barriers to engagement and ensuring she remained connected throughout every stage of her recovery.

Over time, Karon began reducing her alcohol intake, demonstrating increasing confidence, insight and readiness for change. What began as small reductions in daily consumption became the foundation for a much larger step–agreeing to enter a residential detoxification program for the first time.

Today, Karon has successfully completed residential detoxification and is maintaining her sobriety. Chatr coordinated longer term supports with her medical care, mental health treatment and community supports, ensuring she has the long-term foundations needed to maintain recovery, strengthen her independence and continue rebuilding her life.

“If Chatr didn’t come into the picture, I would never have made the changes that I did. It was either detox or die.”
